Note:
Chicago-based furniture maker John A. Colby established his eponymous firm in the 1870s, which was primarily known for the production of fine Renaissance Revival furniture. By the following decade, Colby's two sons had entered the family business, and the firm's name was changed to John A. Colby & Sons, located at 129 North Wabash Avenue. Upon the death of John and his two sons, the company was sold in 1913. By the mid-1920s, in the wake of the economic and societal instability induced by World War I, the furniture-making side of the business was shuttered. Although the firm's production of furniture ceased, its retail operations continued through the mid-1940s, as well as its offering of interior design services.
