Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 12 occupational photographs highlighted by a tintype of railroad workers including an African American subject.
4 x 5 in. tintype showing 11 railroad workers, including an African American man seated in the front row (plate trimmed, minor bends, some spotting). -- 6 1/2 x 8 ½ in. (visible) silver gelatin photograph of an African American barbershop, framed (unexamined out of the frame). -- 4 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. photograph of men posed in front of a possible photography store with "Kodak" above the window, including 4 young men with bicycles, of which 3 are African American. --11 ¾ x 4 in. photograph of a large cookout, possibly in San Francisco as indicated by consignor. Black cooks are shown at center (corners clipped, some spotting, paper residue on verso).
[With:] 4 x 6 3/4 in. copy image of a locomotive, tender, and a few cars of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, with several African Americans shown.
[With:] 3 stereoviews, including, INGERSOLL, T.W., St. Paul, MN. 1898. Image of African American woman coming out of a root cellar, one child rolled off one door, another child leaning on the other door. Captioned in dialect. -- Keystone stereoview of African Americans picking cotton on a Mississippi plantation, laborers include children. -- Presko Binocular Company, Chicago, IL, 1907. Stereoview of African Americans picking cotton in Texas.
[Also with:] 5 x 7 in. photograph of three African American couples enjoying beverages in a restaurant. Mirror on the wall shows another person, likely the waiter or bartender. Consignor identifies as a Los Angeles bar, 1940s. – 2 photographs, each 3 1/2 x 5 1/4 in., taken in the same photographer's studio, with the same prop chair. One of a young woman, the other a young man. Consignor identifies as bride and groom. They are well-dressed and she holds a bouquet of roses. -- 8 x 10 in. copy image of African prisoners, chained together with neck rings.
