The crowning achievements of Kirkland’s career, The Dot Paintings [1963–1981]. This painting falls into the Energy of Mysteries in Space Dot Paintings series [his third to the last series, 1972–1976]. Kirkland created two more equally major series after this [see the 1979 painting being auctioned by Hindman] and then died.
In this painting the dots do not entirely cover the oil paint and water patterns applied underneath. So sometimes the dots are in the foreground and sometimes the oil and water patterns are in the foreground, going back and forth in a stunning way and giving the greatest depth to his paintings that he ever achieved. Yes, this is a small painting, but it is a gem for Kirkland’s career and for art history.
