Vance Kirkland (American, 1904-1981)
Explosions on 20 Billion Years Ago, 1979, from Forces series, oil on canvas, signed Kirkland, dated and numbered (lower right)

This painting portrays the shock waves of the explosions of the previous series, Energy of Explosions in Space [1976–1979], and he portrayed this idea throughout this series of vibrant, powerful paintings until his death in 1981. As Kirkland got older, his paintings became even brighter and more energetic.

Kirkland’s mixtures of oil paint and water, placed underneath the dots, as well as his technique using dots done individually with wooden dowels, both giving him great texture, are both unique contributions to art history.
