Lot Description
Silk Faille and Velvet Two-Piece Dress, 1878

This dress comes from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Tasha Tudor (née Starling Burgess, 1915-2008) was a writer and illustrator of children’s books, including Mother Goose and Corgiville Fair. The idyllic, 19th century world she painted in her books was the lifestyle she pursued: for much of her adult life Tudor lived on New England farms, weaving, tending to animals, baking bread, and collecting, mending, and wearing centuries-old clothing.
For detailed biography, see Jeanette Chandler Knazek, “Tasha Tudor,” Tashatudorandfamily.com.

Brown silk faille trimmed with brown velvet two-piece evening dress. The bodice has a banded collar that is flanked by brown velvet and embellished with a satin ribbon bow, long sleeves are cuffed with velvet and knife pleats, the hips are trimmed in velvet and a large satin ribbon bow at the center back waist, and a center front glass globe button closure. The full skirt is pleated into the waistband and trimmed with brown velvet bands and crocheted tasseled lace, a large front pocket, and left waist opening.

Condition Report
Condition:

The overall condition is good structurally with the following:
Split/Separated Seams: There are loose threads holding the back waist bow to the bodice. The right sleeve velvet cuff has broken tacks. The skirt has several popped stitches throughout but most noticeably along the right side seam about halfway down, the front left side seam just above the hemline, a few in the velvet bands, and what appears to be tacks at the back at seat level.
Losses: The bodice has a small loss at the bottom of the right waist opening. The skirt hemline facing has several holes throughout though cannot confirm if insect damage,
Soiling/Spots: There is some general amount of soiling throughout the bodice, most noticeable on each of the sleeve hems, under each arms, and the upper bodice lining. The back skirt hemline is moderately soiled from wear.
Insect Damage: There doesn't appear to be active insect activity.
Repairs/Alterations: There are several alterations made to the bodice which are most noticeable at the center front buttons where they appear to be replaced, the back princess seams have been let out, and there appears to have been something removed from the collar edging, evidenced by loose and broken threads.
