Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Brevet Major General Andrew A. Humphreys signed CDV. Philadelphia: F. Gutekunst, n.d.
2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount featuring profile portrait of Andrew A. Humphreys, signed in ink below portrait, "A.A. Humphreys / Bvt. Maj. Genl. U.S. Army" (image a bit light, few minor spots, light corner wear to mount).
Son of the renowned American naval architect Joshua Humphreys, Andrew Humphreys was a West Point graduate with nearly thirty years of military experience by the time of the Civil War. He was made Brigadier General in April 1862 and named Chief Topographical Engineer. Humphreys moved to line command before the Maryland campaign in charge of a division and thereafter served with distinction for the remainder of the war. At Gettysburg, he led a division in Sickles' 3rd Corps and earned a regular brevet to brigadier with a promotion to Major General for his stout defense of the exposed corps line in the Peach Orchard.
