Pueblo Painted Buffalo Hide Shield
mid-19th century

concave form, crafted from 1/2-inch-thick buffalo hide; painted abstract design in colors of yellow, black, and red

diameter 19-1/2 inches

...this shield has been repainted several times during its long life. The uppermost coat may represent a diving eagle or other bird of prey, head down and wings folded, splitting the sky and spreading blood with its destructive beak (Hanson 1994: 179).
