[CIVIL WAR] -- [PENNSYLVANIA]. a group of 4 CDVs, incl. view of Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and identified subjects.
CDV showing civilian identified as "Dr. Campbell," who may be Dr. Archibald Campbell of the Pennsylvania 20th Infantry considering the image was found among other CDVs of Pennsylvania soldiers. However, this identification cannot be confirmed. New York: Fredricks. Photographer's sticker affixed to verso (horizontal crease through print and mount, toning, edges and corners appear slightly trimmed).
[With:] CDV identified on verso as "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, Foot of Washington Street, Philadelphia. On the arrival of the first Regiment going to Washington, in April 1861, the Citizens in the neighborhood contributed Coffee and Sandwiches, which were distributed to the Soldiers, from small tables, hastily erected on the sidewalk, corner of Washington and Swanson Streets,...This Institution is supported entirely by voluntary contributions, and has done much to entitle Philadelphia to her beautiful name 'The City of Brotherly Love.'" Uncredited (vertical crease through print and mount, toning, some spotting, corner and edge wear to mount).
[With:] CDV with manuscript identification, "C.G.S. Slocum." Philadelphia, PA: James S. Earle & Son. Full length view of officer holding sword and sash (some surface soiling, edge and corner wear to mount).
[Also with:] CDV with "Comdg 3rd Brigade Pa. Reserves, 3rd Div. 5th Corps." inked on recto, and "Col. J. Fisher / 5th Pa. Res. / Cmg. 3rd Brig. P.R.C." inked on verso. Washington, DC: R.W. Addis (toning, fading to print, corner and edge wear to mount).
The 3rd Brigade was recruited at Philadelphia, and was assigned to Genl. Geo. G. Meade. It was assigned to the Army of Virginia and sent to the Peninsula, where it participated in most of the battles of the Eastern Theater (Second Bull Run). It was then assigned to the Army of the Potomac where it saw action at South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, among others.
