Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR].  A group of 24 patriotic covers, comprising:

23 unused Union patriotic covers, many with satirical representations of Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy. Others covers featuring contraband, naval themes, Zouaves, "Loyal States" and "Rebel States," and one featuring the likeness of Major General George B. McClellan. Union covers are highlighted by one rare early war cover with East Tennessee Unionist sentiments, mentioning General Pillow. -- One Confederate cover depicting a man riding on the tail of an alligator with a crate that reads: "For / New Orleans / and  / A Market."
 
Together 24 covers, most approx. 5 1/2 x 3 in., condition generally very good with expected toning and light soil. Some with small notations on front or verso.

[With:] One color postcard reproducing an original painting by B. A. Richardson, No. 5, depicting “’Virginia (Merrimac)’ in battle with the ‘Monitor’ in Hampton Roads, March 9, 1862” (American Colortype Company, copyright by the artist, 1906). Postmarked 30 March 1908 to Mrs. E. Hanger of Fishersville, VA.
