Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Full plate tintype of soldier attributed as Private Horatio Nelson Greenleaf / Greenlief, 14th Maine Infantry.
6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. tintype portrait of a bearded soldier wearing a kepi and blue-tinted jacket, housed under 10 x 12 in. period mat (surface crackling, some areas of surface loss, some streaking throughout; wear to mat including chips and creasing). The soft focus indicates that this is likely a period enlargement.
Although lacking period identification, the consignor relates that the subject is attributed to be Horatio Nelson Greenleaf (1820-1896), sometimes spelled Greenlief, of New Sharon, Maine. At the age of 44, he enlisted as a private on 2/28/1865 and mustered into Co. F, 14th Maine Infantry. Six months later, he mustered out on 8/28/1865.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
