A collection of items associated with Herman Jonas, including:

1 3/4 x 2 in. tintype of a soldier housed in 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. paper sleeve with penciled identification in lower margin, “Herman Jonas 1 Texas Cav.,” and applied paper print to verso showing a camp scene, stamped “H. Jonas Texas” (partial separation to sleeve verso where tintype has been mounted, trimmed edges). -- Partially printed document formally discharging Herman Jonas from Company C, 1st Regiment of Texas Cavalry Volunteers. San Antonio, Texas, 31 October 1865 (creasing throughout, few holes, tape residue to margins, chipping to edges). 

[With:] Colt 1849 Pocket Model .31 caliber revolver with serial number 232195 to frame, straps, triggerguard, wedge, and arbor pin. Blued metal finish with case hardened frame and brass gripstraps. Cartridge extractor rod is marked with partial number "0561". Barrel has one line Colt New York address marks. Cylinder features weak roll-marked stagecoach scene. Left grip appears to have a very weak boxed cartouche with illegible inspector initials. Finish has thinned overall and turned to a light grey-brown patina. Action is functional. Bore is frosty with moderate to heavy pitting to rifling.

Herman (or Hermann) Jonas (1835-1912), born in Willmersdorf, Germany, immigrated to America in 1852 and settled in Texas. He married Dorothea Grier in June 1861 and had ten children. Jonas enlisted 1 February 1864 in Company I, 1st Texas Union Cavalry, then transferred to Company C, 18 July 1864. He was discharged at San Antonio, TX, 31 October 1865. Research indicates that Jonas had two brothers that also served in the war, including Henry, who enlisted as corporal in the Confederate army, fighting with the 7th Texas Cavalry. Following the Civil War, Herman Jonas lived in Blanco County, TX, and passed away in New Braunfels on 24 November 1912 at the age of 76. 

During the Civil War, Texas contributed two regiments and two battalions of cavalry to the Federal army. The 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment was organized at New Orleans, LA, 6 November 1862, and saw duty in the defenses of New Orleans through September 1863. They were involved in the occupation of Brownsville, TX, in November 1863, and at the Rio Grande until July 1864. Company C was at Rancho Las Rinas in June 1864. The regiment was ordered to New Orleans in July 1864, but a detachment remained in Texas at Brownsville through January 1865, when they joined the regiment at Baton Rouge, LA, where they remained until May. They were ordered to Mississippi from 23 May to 29 June, 1865, then sent to Texas, where they mustered out in November 1865.
