Lot Description
[MILITARIA]. New York Militia musket by John Mullin.
About .70 caliber bore musket with a 42" round barrel. Fullstock percussion musket with notch and blade sights. Item features bright finished neo-classical stock fixtures and simple scroll engravings to lock and upper tang. Barrel is marked "JOHN MULLIN. NEW YORK" with "V/P/{Eagle Head}" proofs. Finish has mottled appearance overall. Stock has a wood repair to left side of forearm where a stock nail appears to be missing. Bore is dark. Action is functional.
Most likely made by John Mullin, an Irish gunmaker who operated out of New York City from about 1846-1850, producing quality percussion rifles in a shop he shared with his brother on Fulton Street. John and his brother Patrick immigrated from Ireland after working as gunsmiths in London and Dublin where they produced high quality percussion shotguns and expensive breech loading sport guns.
