Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate tintype of Private Alexander LeCompte, Co. F, 1st Eastern Shore Infantry.

Sixth plate seated portrait of a rather young man identified as Alexander Lecompte, featured wearing his 9-button shell jacket and cap. (Significant crackling to image, some oxidation to preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear, separation with repair to spine). Newspaper clipping identifies subject as Alexander Lecompte, who drowned in the Potomac River after walking overboard, apparently unconscious, from the schooner T.J. Dail, "sinking the moment before his friends reached the spot in a boat."

Lecompte enlisted as a private on 31 October 1861, mustering into Company F, 1st Maryland Eastern Short Infantry Regiment that same day. He was transferred into Company G, 11th Maryland Infantry Regiment on 23 February 1865, and finally mustered out that July.
