Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Full plate tintype copy portrait of an unidentified soldier, likely Confederate.

Approx. 6 3/8 x 8 3/8 in. oval tintype copy portrait. (Tarnishing to edges, significant surface scratches to subject's face and torso, lighter scratching and wiping elsewhere.) Housed in a 14 x 16 in. wooden wall frame (not examined out of frame).

Subject wears what appears to be a 7-button frock coat, with dark rows of tape on the collar. Such collar rows are documented on southern uniforms worn by certain Alabama, South Carolina, George, Virginia, and Louisiana infantry regiments, among others; however, the English Victorian Rifle Volunteers also wore mostly gray uniforms including some with collar details like the ones featured here.
