[MILITARIA]. 50+ photographs of military subjects in the United States and abroad.

A group of approx. 50 photographs of military subjects, including CDVs, tintypes, cabinet cards, and large format photographs, ranging in size from 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 in. to 13 1/4 x 16 1/2 in., several being cabinet cards (approx. 5 1/2 x 4 in.). The collection is comprised of portraits of individuals and groups, both formal and informal, including some images of soldiers taken in the field, ca mid-19th century through early 20th century.

Several photographs are credited on the cardstock mount or in the negative. Identified photographers include: S. Long (Woolwich). -- A. 8 x 6 1/8 in. photograph on cardstock mount, showing a group of six soldiers displaying their knives, a US flag draped behind them. Penciled notation on verso, "Right rear row, Carl Edward Schultz, L Company, 7th Infantry, Fort Sheridan, IL 1898. 7th Regulars Spanish American War..." (toning, some fading, chipping and loss to edges and corners). -- 13 1/4 x 16 1/2 in. large format photograph on cardstock mount showing a group of US officers with medals pinned to their coats (soiling, edge and corner wear to mount). -- 4 CDV-sized tintypes of men in uniform (few with some creasing to plates). -- CDV, outdoor view of a man in uniform, standing at a fence in front of a large building. Hythe: J.V. Cobb. Inked inscription on verso, "From your son John Kurnan, School of Musketry..." (spotting, toning). -- Hand-painted CDV of an officer. Ludwigsburg: G. Rossle. -- Cabinet card of mustachioed man wearing a GAR badge, ink signed by the subject as "Dept. Guard, GAR" at lower right, with name that is difficult to discern. -- Cabinet card of Lieutenant Laurence C. Brown, 2nd US Artillery, with penciled identification and notation on verso, "At present at Fort Cabanas, Cuba." -- Cabinet card of Capt. W.B. Homer (?), 6th US Artillery, Battery H, with penciled notation on verso indicating that he was presently at Manilla. -- Cabinet card captioned, "Camp Columbia, Havana, Cuba, 1899," providing a view of a large group of US soldiers in the field, proudly displaying two flags, including a US flag with text partially visible, "1st Texas Inf. US Vols.," as well as a flag with spread-winged eagle. -- Cabinet card of an Australian sailor. Sydney: Herbst (spotting, toning). -- Cabinet card of a sailor from the HMS Firebrand. Peckham, London: B. Kay. -- Cabinet card of a subject in uniform, likely an actress by the name of Mathilde Cottrelly as indicated by verso notation. Union Square: Naegeli (some creasing to print and mount). -- Group of 9 photographs showing soldiers in formation or drilling (toning, occasional spotting). -- 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. photograph on cardstock mount, group portrait of US sailors posed outside, with a large American flag flying above them (toning, spotting, corner and edge loss). -- 8 x 11 1/2 in. silver gelatin photograph inscribed on verso, "After execution of Chinese Pirates, Kowloon, China" (creasing, few tears, toning). -- 5 1/2 x 8 in. photograph titled in the negative, "USS 'Glaciers' Picnic, Febry. 22nd, Sydney, 1903." A combination of sailors and civilians pose for the photograph. Sydney: Murell & Co.

Together, approx. 50 photographs of military subjects. Condition varies from poor to very good, with toning, spotting, edge and corner wear throughout. Some mounts are trimmed.
