Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. South Carolina palmetto secession cockade.
4 in. diam. black ribbon cockade consisting of 4 concentric circles with an intricately woven palmetto design applied at center (fraying and some loose threads to black ribbon cockade). The palmetto leaves have been braided and arranged to look like the symbolic South Carolina state tree.

Cockades like the one featured here were worn by South Carolinians to show their support for the state's secession from the Union in 1860. Civilian men and women, and even companies of soldiers, wore palmetto emblems during the Civil War.
