Lot Description
1862-Dated Continental Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket

.59 caliber. 39" barrel length. SN: NSN. Percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with adjustable folding ladder rear sight and combination bayonet lug and blade front sight that appears to be period altered. Blued metal finish with brass and iron furnishings. Walnut stock has a plain straight grip and forearm with three barrel bands, with upper band a "U" marked US replacement. Markings include "1862" to center of lockplate and a "{crown}" without regent initials. Buttplate is marked with what appears to be "DH" beneath an obscured mark, and triggerguard is marked "{circled M}/JC" to rear tang, typical of markings found on the breech of French contract Enfield Rifle Muskets. No British proofs are present on the gun. Item features a two click tumbler and sling swivel to front of triggerguard. Included is a slotted jag steel ramrod.

Condition Report

Fair. Moderately oxidized metal with pitting and vise marks at breech. Mechanically functional, hammer and hammer screw replaced. Several additional small screws replaced. Fair bore is smooth with moderate pitting. Wood stock has a 2" crack extending from rear lock screw on left side. Stock also has scratching and mars overall.
