Robert Stiegler was a photographer and filmmaker born in Chicago. He completed a bachelor’s degree (1960) at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (ID) in Chicago, studying with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Stiegler returned to ID to complete a master’s degree in 1970. He taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he helped to develop the photography program, from 1966 until his death in 1990. A retrospective of Stiegler’s work was held in 1992 at Gallery 400, University of Illinois at Chicago, and his work was exhibited in Passing the Torch: The Chicago Students of Callahan and Siskind at Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago (2010). 

Stiegler received numerous grants, including from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), Chicago; Art Institute of Chicago; and Museum of Modern Art, New York, among many others.
