Leonard Suryajaya

Knot Ball, 2022
Edition: 1 of 5
Framed dimensions: 27 x 22 inches.

Leonard Suryajaya uses photography to test the boundaries of intimacy, community, and family. His works show how everyday experiences and objects are layered with histories, meanings, and potential. In elaborately staged photographs bursting with competing patterns and colors, Suryajaya creates absurd but affectionate tableaux featuring his family and community. Enlisting his loved ones into his photographic projects, he encourages wild combinations and poses as a means for them to perform their loyalty. The results are photographs that are tender and critical, bound up with the struggles of familial authority and self-identity.

Suryajaya has exhibited his work at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), Chicago; Aperture Gallery, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Barney Savage Gallery, New York; Benaki Museum, Greece; Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; National Library, Singapore; Now Gallery, London; Photoforum Pasquart, Switzerland; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; and Wrightwood 659. His work is included in the MoCP permanent collection, among others.
