Terry Evans photographs the prairies and plains of North America, and the urban prairie of Chicago. Combining aerial and ground images, she delves into the intricate and complex relationships between land and people. Evans has significantly collaborated with local Chicago community members from the city’s southeast neighborhoods, as they fought petroleum pollution effects from the nationally prominent Koch brothers’ petcoke storage area on the banks of the Calumet River. Over her long career, Evans has photographed many different stories of human land use. Her work advocates a repositioning of some human being’s rationale to assess “How can this land serve us?” to a more sustainable approach: “How can we serve this land?” Evans is well-known for her work photographing all four seasons as experienced by a 300-year-old Bur Oak tree in Chicago’s Jackson Park. She has exhibited widely, is a Guggenheim Fellow, and is an award recipient from Anonymous Was a Woman. Her work is included in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), Chicago, among others.
