Lot of 2 Indian Pata Swords
Lot includes:
1.) 39" blade length. 50" overall. Double edge rounded spear tip blade with 3" narrow fullers to both sides. Sword blade possibly of European make as both fullers are chiseled with markings that appear to be French or Latin and are followed by an anchor marking surrounded by four stars. Gauntlet is made of iron and blade is fastened with three rivets.
2.) 28.25" blade length. 39.25" overall. Double edge spear tip blade with 11.5" steel braces to both sides. Hilt is made of brass, chiseled with Arabesque borderwork, has brass tassels, and is embossed to resemble a grotesque head. Appears to have been painted red at some point.
Evolving from the katar, pata swords were mostly used by cavalry and featured a gauntlet to protect the user as well as a long flat blade that could also be used as a lance during charges. They were the favorite weapon of the Mahrattas but were also used by most Indian nations, according to Stone.
