Lot Description
A Chippendale Shell-and-Block Carved Cherrywood Chest of Drawers
Likely Connecticut, Circa 1775
Height 35 1/4 x width 37 3/4 x depth 19 1/4 inches.
Provenance:
Ex-Collection, Crawford Wettlaufer, Buffalo, New York
Condition Report
In overall fine and stable condition. Appears to retain the original drawer pulls. Retains a fairly even, refinished patina throughout. Old scuffs, marks and scratches consistent with age, use and manufacture. The outer shell carvings appear to be carved separately and then attached to the drawer face. Few age cracks throughout. Traces of glue visible to the dovetails of the poplar sub-top. The top is attached to the sub-top using a series of eight screws coming from inside of the case, through the sub-top and into the underside of the top. The top, while seemingly early, shows old screw holes that do not match up to the current sub-top, so it is possible that either the sub-top or the top are replaced. There is a mortis carved out of the molding above the top drawer, however there is no lock mechanism or suggestion of a lock mechanism ever having been installed.
