[COLONIAL]. HOPKINSON, Francis (1737-1791). Document signed ("Fras. Hopkinson"), while serving as Judge of the Court of Admiralty of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia, 17 December 1787.
approx. 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (sight), under mat and housed in gold frame, then framed in wood to 23 5/8 x 13 in. (light toning, wear to original gold frame, unexamined outside frame). Document matted alongside a print of Hopkinson, approx. 4 x 7 1/2 in., by H. Wright Smith, Jr.
Writ issued by Judge Frances Hopkinson for James Ramage "late Commander of the ship Ann" to appear before him to answer charges laid against the commander by William Bettey and Alexander Donnell, mariners who who state they were due wages for their labors aboard the said ship.
Prior to serving as judge of the Court of Admiralty, Hopkinson was a prominent patriot and Founding Father, as well as a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and member of the Second Continental Congress.
