Lot Description
[1880 ELECTION]. A group of ballots and political ephemera, comprising:
3 Republican tickets including the "National Republican Ticket, Garfield and Arthur." 2 5/8 x 4 1/2 in. (light soil, small losses at upper corners), featuring the likenesses of Garfield and Arthur; 2 scarce 1880 election tickets from South Carolina, one Democratic and another Republican; an 1880 Democratic ticket from Indiana; a small promotional pamphlet featuring the 1880 presidential and vice-presidential candidates, "Presented by 'Knox' the Hatter, New York."; and anti-Greenback Party "currency" in the amount of "One Thousand Dollars" noting that it is "Redeemable nowhere, in nothing; and by nobody."
In the post Civil War-era, the 1880 Presidential Election divided an already deeply fractured nation. In one of the closest elections in US history, Republican James A. Garfield narrowly edged out Winfield S. Hancock for the presidency.
