Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. MORROW, Stanley J., photographer. CDV of subject identified as Yankton Chief Ma-do-ca (The Buck). Yankton, Dakota Territory.

2 x 3 3/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, some fading to print, wear to edges; mount trimmed, clipped corners). Verso with S.J. Morrow's Yankton, D.T. ink stamp and period inked notation, "Ma-do-ca (The Buck) / Chief under Two Bear."

A 4 March 1856 report from Brevet Brigadier General William S. Harney, recorded as part of Exhibit C in Congressional Edition, Vol. 2363, reads, "The Buck is appointed a chief of the Honepatela band of Yanktonnais under Two Bears. He will obey him and respect him accordingly. This continue in full force as long as he does so..." Additional reports from military officers show that The Buck was seen as a "true friend" to the U.S. government.
