Lot Description
WATKINS, Carleton (1829-1916), photographer. The Three Brothers, Yosemite. [Ca 1861-1863].
20 5/8 x 16 in. albumen photograph with rounded top on cardstock mount with fully separated mat (image with streaks of discoloration from earlier wooden backing; mount with heavy fading, spotting, and 2 1/2 in. horizontal rip to right edge though not affecting actual photograph; mat with heavy fading and spotting). Signed in ink just below image, "C. E. Watkins," inscribed in pencil to lower right corner, "Pompompasos - The Three Brothers - 4480 ft Yosemite."
Featured as print 168 (CEW 27) in Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Plates by Weston Naef & Christine Hult-Lewis. They note, "This view was made looking northeast along the Merced River... It was one of the set of thirty 1861 prints issued in 1863."
