Rei Kawakubo’s spring/summer 1998 runway presentation, also known as the ‘Clustering Beauty’ collection, was shown back-to-back with Margiela’s collection of the same season to demonstrate the shared values of both deconstructivist designers. Of her collection, Kawakubo said, “There is beauty in the unfinished. The very fact of something being unfinished gives it more a feeling of something projecting ahead into the future.” The raw edges of the draped lapel allude to Kawakubo’s ongoing romance with deconstruction.
