Hindman’s June 21 American Historical Ephemera and Photography Auction contains nearly 300 lots representing many significant moments and figures in our nation’s history. From the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Indian Wars, and westward expansion, to abolition and women’s suffrage, the auction features property with broad appeal. Highlights include a half plate tintype showing Company D, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment in the field; an autograph letter signed by George Armstrong Custer to Captain George Yates, 7th Cavalry, Fort Yates, Dakota Territory, 11 June 1871, from the Forrest Fenn Collection; the Rosborough family archive, including letters relating to the California gold rush, the Modoc War, the Klondike gold rush, and early settlement and mining interests in Idaho, Nevada, and Texas; and items signed by George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Susan B. Anthony. Included are selections from the Forrest Fenn Collection, the Collection of Dr. Brant Mittler, the Collection of Tom Charles Huston, the Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection, and the Stanley B. Burns, MD, Historic Medical Photography Collection.

Among the exceptional items within the Hermann Collection are over 40 pieces of headgear highlighted by a Model 1832 US Infantry shako for an enlisted soldier and a Civil War Union General’s Hardee hat; 9 prewar and Civil War-period painted drums including a rare Marine Corps drum possibly made during the Mexican War; over 20 Civil War presentation and corps badges, including a II Army Corps badge presented to Colonel Michael Cotter Murphy, 170th New York Infantry, Medal of Honor recipient for action at the Battle of North Anna River on 24 May 1864, and first New York City Police Commissioner; and a cut-down frock coat, vest, and sash identified to Lt. Colonel John T. Lockman, 83rd and 119th New York Regiments, WIA at Gettysburg.
