Also known as the "Auburn regiment" or the "Cayuga County Regiment," the 75th New York was originally mustered in for a three year term on 26 November 1861 and spent its first winter on garrison duty in Florida before seeing action in several battles throughout Louisiana, taking part in the Red River Campaign of 1863 and the Siege of Port Hudson in 1864. It was removed to Virginia in the fall of 1864 and sustained heavy losses at Opequon and Cedar Creek. All told, the regiment lost approx. 198 men during service; 4 officers and 91 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 103 enlisted men died of disease.
