Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. XXIII Army Corps headquarters badge.

Approx. 2 1/4 x 2 1/2 in. shield-shape badger with bullion border and wool centers in red, blue, and white, indicating the headquarters of the XXIII Army Corps. Provenance: James Frasca (related by consignor).

Phillips quotes letters indicating the badge was established during the winter of 1863-64, worn throughout the Atlanta campaign, and was officially adopted in September 1864. Captain J.M. Marshall, Chief of Staff to General Schofield, recalled the headquarters badge having blue in the upper right and white at the bottom, as this badge does. The form formally adopted reversed this order, however, likely indicating that this was an earlier configuration.
