[CIVIL WAR]. Ketchum's patent hand grenade.
3 pound hand grenade, approx. 11 in. overall ht. (fins replaced, plunger intact).
Patented on 20 August 1861 by William F. Ketchum of Buffalo, New York, the Ketchum grenade came in 1, 3, and 5 pound varieties. The internal plunger was designed to strike a percussion cap upon impact, igniting the gun powder inside.
