3 volumes, Folio (15 x 20 1/2 in.), each 8 pages, 283 issues (incomplete) numbering: First bound volume: Vol. III, No. 17, Whole No. 121, 6 January 1844 - Vol. IV, No. 6, Whole No. 162, 19 October 1844 (lacking Whole Nos. 134, & 143); Vol. V, No. 32, Whole No. 240-Vol. VI, No. 52, Whole No. 312, 4 September 1847 (lacking Whole Nos. 276, 292, & 293); Second bound volume: Vol. VII No. 1, Whole No. 313, 11 October 1847 - Vol. VIII, No. 17, Whole No. 381, 30 December 1848 (lacking Whole No. 328); Third bound volume: Vol. X, No. 512, 5 July 1851 - Vol. XII, No. 624 (lacking Nos. 535, 558, 576, 586-589, and 614). (Some browning, spotting, old creases.) Contemporary one-quarter calf with marbled boards, first two volumes uniformly bound with red and black morocco spine labels gilt, third with black morocco spine labels gilt (scuffing, wear to extremities).
Provenance: 1840s volumes, Seymour L. Judd, Windsor, NY (ownership inscriptions to front free endpapers dated 1849, several individual issues with ownership inscription). Seymour L. Judd (1823-1864) is listed as a merchant in Windsor, New York, in the 1850 census. He enlisted at Windsor on 30 September 1861 as a captain and was commissioned into Company G of the 89th New York Infantry. He was wounded in the right lung on 16 July 1864 at Petersburg and died of his wounds at Fort Monroe, VA on 27 August 1864.
The papers cover politics and social events, notably with coverage of the outbreak and progression of the Mexican-American War.
