[NEW YORK]. Ephemera related to the state of New York highlighted by a rare copy of an 1871 New York Times investigative report on Boss William M. Tweed and the Tammany Democrats.

How New York is Governed. Frauds of the Tammany Democrats. New York: New York Daily Times. 1871. 8vo. Advertisements to interior wrappers. (Minor toning.) Original printed wrappers (short tears or chips at edges). FIRST EDITION, listed as "New York Times Edition." An investigative report into the Tweed Ring, especially by examining the accounting in 1869, 1870, and 1871. Considered "the Times's first triumph as an investigative newspaper." (25 May 2015, The New York Times). The paper started by publishing small details before issuing this pamphlet and a German-language edition, reportedly selling more than 500,000 copies (Ackerman, Boss Tweed). Provenance: Burton Historical Collection, Detroit (Duplicate stamp on p. 3).
