Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Collection 52 stereoviews dating from the 19th-20th century, highlighted by H.A. Doerr Stereoview of the Alamo.

6 x 3 1/8 in., or smaller, stereoviews on cardstock mounts (overall very good to near excellent condition, some with toning, soiling, and occasional spotting; some with corner and edge wear to mounts). The following stereoviews are included:

Stereoview of men posed at the doorway of the Alamo. San Antonio, TX: H.A. Doerr & Jacobson. Verso with descriptive text and Doerr's ink stamp imprint.

[With:] Rare, nicely hand-colored stereoview by an anonymous photographer with penned title on verso, "Funeral of Cold Storage fire victims, World's Fair." The six-story Cold Storage Building was one of the largest built for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The steel and wood structure with white plaster covering was a massive ice works and refrigerated warehouse for perishable foods used by various fair vendors. It also contained an ice skating rink. The building had a 200-foot chimney which was covered by a wood cupola, a fatal design flaw. On 10 July 1893, the cupola caught fire. About 20 firemen climbed the cupola not realizing the inner walls were on fire. The cupola collapsed into the building as the firemen either jumped to their deaths or perished in the flames. Though B.W. Kilburn recorded the fire, the funeral was apparently not photographed until this view was found in the Burchard collection. The image shows the procession with large crowds lining the street with street cars in the background. Provenance: Ed Burchard Collection (sold, Cowan's, 15 September 2011, lot 177).

Marshal, Mrs. Richard Burleson; Herald, Miss Inez Milholland; and other Prominent Workers on Horseback--March 3, 1913, Washington, D.C. View shows a huge crowd jamming the street as the suffragettes, march, ride horses and ride in autos parading for their cause. A large sign in the middle reads "We Demand an Amendment to the Constitution of the United State Enfranchising the Women of the Country." -- V26151 "Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, Suffrage Leader."
