Lot Description
[POLITICS]. Partly printed Catholic Oath of Loyalty signed by a female subscriber, Ursulla Reind. Wingham, County Kent, England, 21 October 1723.
1 page, 7 1/2 x 12 1/16 in., with engraved seal of King George I, old creases. Printed by J. Coles, London.
Taken during the last instance of mass public oath taken in the aftermath of the Jacobite Atterbury Plot of 1722 which aimed to restore the Catholic House of Stuart to the throne. After the collapse of the plot, the Papists Act 1722 required all landowners to take oaths of allegiance by Christmas 1723. As such, oaths signed by women are exceedingly scarce.
