Lot Description
[MILITIA].  A group of  documents related to nineteenth-century state militias, including broadsides and a War of 1812 appointment signed by Connecticut Governor John Cotton Smith.

SMITH, John Cotton (1765-1845). Document signed ("John Cotton Smith") as Governor of Connecticut. Hartford, CT, 12 May 1814. Appointment for Elihu Beach, Lieutenant of the Grenadier Company of the 28th Connecticut Militia Regiment. 12 3/4 x 7 7/8 in. (nearly fully separated along vertical crease, with other tears to edges and soiling/discoloration spots throughout). -- Unfulfilled and undated commission signed by Colonel William Powers for the Vermont Militia. 13 3/8 x 8 1/4 in. (creasing, chipping to edges/corners). -- Partly printed Company Order for Sergeant Ely McIntire, commanding him to notify all men enrolled in his company that they are ordered to "appear, with the arms and equipments required by law...for military duty and Inspection." Signed by Commanding Officer Christopher Burbank, 11 April 1822. 7 7/8 x 16 1/4 in. (original order fully separated along horizontal crease and attached to top and bottom of separate piece of paper with manuscript list of names, creasing, spotting, and chipping to edges). Order returned and signed by Sergeant Ely McIntire 5 May 1822. -- SHAW, Basil. Autograph note signed summarizing a Court Marshall held on 4 October 1811. 7 1/2 x 6 3/8 in. (creasing, discoloration, staining, wear to edges and corners). -- And 5 other manuscript documents, including a report of neglectful behavior by militia company members, each dated between 1815-1825. -- Together, 9 militia documents dated to the first quarter of the nineteenth century.

[With]: ROBERTS, Jeremiah. Document twice signed ("Jeremiah Roberts"), as Commander of the Second Division, New Hampshire Militia. Farmington, NH, 4 September 1844. Manuscript recommendation of three men to fill staff vacancies in the 2nd Division, New Hampshire Militia. 8 1/4 x 9 in. (creased, paper loss to right edge, spotting). -- And 3 other manuscript documents including 2 related to General Roberts and staff, both dated 1845. -- Together 4 manuscript documents. 

[With:] Printed invitation to the Boston Light Infantry Annual Ball. Boston, MA, February 1859. 7 1/2 x 9 3/4 in. (creased at folds). Undersigned in type by Commander Charles O. Rogers.
