Lot Description
[LEAVENWORTH].  A group of 4 stampless covers addressed to Adjutant General Robert Jones in Washington, DC, including two with 1840s Fort Leavenworth cancellations, comprising:

Lt. Col. Richard B. Mason, Dragoons Commander. Fort Leavenworth. 21 July 1843. "Reports the return of Capt. Cook & his command." Notation on 9 August 1843 in different hand "[This officer ought not to have been active roll at this day - he of course, cannot be head man]". Fort Leavenworth hand stamp within which is handwritten cancellation "July 22." Black free frank stamp. -- Lt. Jonathan Love, 1st Dragoons. Fort Leavenworth. 17 June 1846. "Reports to his arrival with 15 Recruits." Fort Leavenworth hand stamp within which is handwritten cancellation June "20." "On Public Service" 10 rate. Received Washington 6 July 1846.

[With:] New London, Connecticut. 3 July 1843. "George Lamman Comp. C 6 Infantry / Requesting his discharge." Red free frank stamp. -- George W. Claster, Lieut. 13th Infantry. Morgantown, Va. 14 May 1847.  "Reports 28 Recruits the orders he has recd from Captain Pyles (sp?) to march to Wheeling - asks for instructions - shall require $200." Handwritten "On Public Business."

US Army Adjutant General Roger Jones was the longest serving man to hold the position, serving from 1825-1852.
