[VAN BUREN, Martin (1782-1862)]. Public Sales of United States lands in the Laporte District, Indiana, deferred for a period of ninety days. Signed in type "M. Van Buren" as U.S. President. 27 November 1838.
1p, 8" x 10" (small tears along horizontal folds on left side, light toning and soil, diagonal crease along top edge).
Broadside notifies the public that a sale of land at LaPorte, Indiana, scheduled for 3 December [1838], is deferred until March 4 [1839], and another sale scheduled for 17 December has also been postponed until March. Notice is signed in type by Martin Van Buren, at the City of Washington, during the second year of his presidency. Also signed in type by James Whitcomb (1795-1852) as Commissioner of the General Land Office. The sale was likely for lands taken from Indians of the Potawatomi Nation who were forcibly relocated as part of the United States Indian Removal policy.
