Lot Description
[TAYLOR, Zachary (1784-1850)] -- [CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH]. Journal & Register Extra. Springfield, IL, 25 December 1849. Broadside featuring President Zachary Taylor's message to the country incl. California content.

17 3/4 x 26 3/4 in. letterpress broadside (minor toning).

A report of President Taylor's address, in which he provides a thorough account of America's state of foreign relations: "We are at peace with the world, and seem to maintain our cherished relations of amity with the rest of mankind." He summarizes the United States's relations with Great Britain, France, the German Empire, Denmark, Russia, Portugal, Mexico, and New Granada. He continues with reference to the California Gold Rush: "The extension of the coast of the United States on the Pacific, and the unexampled rapidity with which the inhabitants of California are increasing in uumbers, has imparted new consequence to our relations with the other countries, and whose territorise [sic] borders upon the Ocean. It is probably that the intercourse between those countries and our possessions in that quarter, particularly with the Republic of Chili [sic], will become extensive and mutually advantageous, in proportion as California and Oregon should increase in population and wealth."

The discussion of foreign relations continues, but Taylor also addresses the recently met convention in California "for the purpose of forming a convention and state government; which the latest advice give me reason to suppose, has been accomplished; and it is believed they will shortly apply for an admission of California into the Union as a sovereign state." He also notes that "A collector has been appointed at San Francisco under the act of Congress extending the revenue laws over California." RARE: OCLC locates only 1 copy, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.
