Lot Description
A Regency Brass Inlaid Mahogany Longcase Clock with an Animated Dial
G.R. Taylor, Sunderland, Circa 1815
the painted dial commemorating Wellington's victory with portraits of his four generals, animated to depict a cannonball discharge into French troops; with an eight-day brass movement.

Condition Report
The dial is signed 'G.R. Taylor, Sunderland' the frame for the works is stamped 'Walker & Co., Birmingham', the underside of the bell with an inscription reading 'W______ Waldorff-May 1844' and the case with a paper label to interior reading 'From Millers Gothic Warehouse of Fashionable Cabinet Furniture, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne'. The works and case are associated but are likely contemporaneous to each other.
The case in overall decent, stable condition. Retaining an even finish throughout. Having a few small areas of missing veneer to edges and an area of loss to brass inlay on the right side below hood, neither detracts from overall aesthetic of case unless inspected closely. Larger age crack to front panel on base. The front left foot with a small chip to bottom, appears otherwise stable. The saddle has been rebuilt and has replacement boards attached to original sides with modern hardware, replacement boards have been varnished black to give the appearance of age.
The works appear largely intact, take a wind and appear to run but have not been tested for accuracy nor duration. Flywheel is connected to bell but does not appear to run and likely needs a cleaning to operate properly. The weights hang from works in a way that makes them rub against the back of the door when suspended. The dial of the clock is lacking its second hand. The dial has likely been repainted. Clock does not come with case key nor winding crank.
