Lot Description
[MILITARIA]. US Model 1832 artillery sword with scabbard. Manufactured by N.P. Ames, Springfield, MA.
19 in. blade length. 25 3/4 in. overall with scabbard. Straight, double edged sword with solid brass hilt and three fullers in the leaf shaped blade (very fine condition, some areas of tarnish to blade). Obverse of blade is stamped "US/1843" near hilt above inspector marking, "JCB." Reverse of blade stamped faintly "N.P. Ames / Springfield," with most lettering worn. Guard stamped with inspector mark "W.A.T." (Captain W.A. Thornton). Hilt features a scale texture pattern to grips with eagle stamped into both sides of pommel. Scabbard is black leather with brass chape and locket as well as part of white buff leather frog (scabbard with light surface wear). Provenance: Sherwoods of America, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2 January 2008 (consignor's note).
