Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Non-regulation Civil War Staff & Field officer's import sword "Peterson 75," based on the British 1854 pattern, with blade emblazoned with the Oregon Territorial Seal.
32 in. curved, single-edge blade with 20 1/2 in. stopped median fuller. Overall length 38 in. Throat washer in place. Steel guard with foliate design. Wire-wrapped chagreen grip. Ricasso stamped "Clauberg Solingen" (light tarnish to surface). Spine of blade etched "IRON PROOF." Blade with exquisite etching enhanced in gold. Obverse features a rendering of the Oregon Territory seal with the Latin motto, "Alis volat propriis," flanked by highly detailed patriotic and floral/scroll motifs, with a spread-winged eagle and crossed flags near the ricasso. Reverse etched with additional patriotic motifs, including a dramatic battle scene flanked by floral/scroll motifs, with "US" above and a suit of armor with crossed flags and "E Pluribus Unum" near the ricasso. Lacquer browned steel scabbard with two gilt brass mounts and suspension rings (few dings, some oxidation, tarnish throughout).
The Territorial Seal of Oregon featured on the sword was used ca 1849-1859, dating the manufacture of the sword to 1854-1859. As of February 1859, this territorial seal became obsolete when the new state seal was utilized.
An incredibly rare Civil War-period Oregon foot officer's sword in very fine condition.
