Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Fourth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. Able Bodied Men Wanted for the Fourth Regiment. Concord, NH: Fogg, Hadley & Co., September 1861.
21 1/4 x 29 1/4 in. printed broadside housed in 26 1/4 x 34 1/2 in. frame (folding, with some separations near folds, chipping, tearing, and some loss to corners and edges, residue to margins, unexamined outside frame). Signed in type by Lieutenant J.M. Clough and Sergeant W.B. Rowe. Top center features a large illustration of an eagle holding a banner in its beak reading, "Down with the Rebellion," credited to L. Johnson & Co.
Organized in Manchester, NH, the 4th New Hampshire Regiment was active from September 1861 to August 1865. The regiment served primarily in Florida and the Carolinas, seeing action at Port Royal, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the Crater, Fair Oaks, Chaffin's Farm, Fort Fisher, and Wilmington.
