Navy blue seven-button double-breasted wool frock coat with velvet-lined standing collar and lieutenant colonel's shoulder straps. Shoulder straps are single bordered, 1 1/2 x 4 in. with silver bullion oak leaves, background dark blue indicating a lieutenant colonel with staff duty. Fourteen Union staff buttons on the front with backmarks "Scoville Mfg. Co.," "Steele / Johnson," and "Extra Quality" and one on the reverse with backmark "Thomas N.
