Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Union Artillery shell jacket with saber belt and holster.

Shell jacket with full body and sleeve lining. Blue wool body with complete run of red worsted tape trim and pillows. All general service eagle buttons present, most unmarked but 4 with Scovill Manufacturing backmark and possibly reapplied. Marked within the right sleeve is what appears to be a size "3" though a portion of the marking is worn through, also an illegible stamp possibly an inspector stamp. Marked within left sleeve is a circular "OCI" stamp and an illegible purple stamp.  At center back are two "UCI" stamps above black paint stenciled block letters "Size 37," perhaps indicating an original surplus jacket used at a later date by a theater company.

Exterior blue wool generally in good condition with light soil and wear, approx. 1 1/2 in. tear along seam at back of standing collar, and evidence of hand repairs.

[With:] Approx. 32 in. blackened buff belt with brass keeper and 3 1/8 x 2 1/8 in. Model 1851 cast brass eagle plate with applied nickel silver wreath and narrow tongue (general wear and cracking to leather surface; significant oxidation and discoloration to plate; bench number only decipherable on keeper, 928). This plate style cataloged as Plate 660 in O'Donnell and Duncan Campbell. Belt includes both hanging straps, brass scabbard support hook, and leather holster likely made to fit a Colt 1860 Army or Remington New Model Army.
