Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 2 items, incl. drafting set and watercolor set from the Civil War period. 

Civil War-era drafting kit with original key. With 11 steel and brass instruments including compasses, extension legs, dividers, and an early drawing pen with turned bone handle. 8 x 4 3/4 x 1 1/2 in. wood box with blue silk and velvet lining and original functional key. Smallest instrument length 1 3/8 in.; longest 6 in. (minor tarnish). 

[With:] Watercolor set with original pigments in box. Philadelphia: G.W. Osborne, n.d. Box 7 1/2 x 3 1/8 x 5/8 in.; pigment bricks approx. 3/4 x 1/2 in. (some light soil to interior, 2 vertical dividers lacking). With manufacture's and retailer's label to box interior. Retailed by Scholz & Janentzky, which was in business in Philadelphia from 1852-1885. Includes 19 pigment bricks, and remnants of a 20th, each stamped with a bust to obverse and "Scholz & Janetzky Philadelphia" to reverse. The box features dividers and labels for 24 colors including Prussian blue, Carnation, Solferino, and Ultramarine.
