Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Civil War soldier's stencil identified to W.R. Brackett, 35th Massachusetts Infantry, found at Cold Harbor.
4 3/4 x 1 3/4 in. stencil (several bends and areas of discoloration, some areas of loss impacting lettering). Stencil reads, "W.R. Brackett. / 35th Mass. Regt." (35th Massachusetts Regiment). Provenance: Found at Cold Harbor (related by consignor); Collection of former North Carolina police officer, John Overmann; Richmond Civil War Show, 16 November 2014.
While no soldier with the initials "W.R. Brackett" is listed in HDS as serving with the 35th Massachusetts Regiment, two soldiers with the last name "Brackett" were found that served with the regiment, including Loring R. Brackett of Company E, WIA Antietam 9/17/1862, DOW Frederick, MD 11/10/1862, and Edward J. Brackett of Company D, WIA Antietam 9/17/1862, WIA Poplar Springs Church 9/30/1864. It is possible that the soldier's name was misunderstood when the stencil was created, but no further provenance accompanies the lot making the identification difficult to confirm.
Property from the Civil War and Militaria Collection of George Sanders of Albuquerque, New Mexico
