Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Civil War-era aide memoire with tortoise shell covers.
1 5/8 x 3 in. (closed dimensions) riveted booklet comprising 7 thinly sliced bone pages, tortoise shell covers, and silver propelling pencil and fittings (pages with remnants of pencil markings and discoloration consistent with use, some scratching to covers).
The aide memoire was a Victorian-era version of a weekly calendar, upon which users could write daily reminders and engagements. At the end of each week, the sheets could be wiped clean with a damp cloth and reused. The example featured here is rare in that it includes a seventh day, whereas many examples only include six days.
Property from the Civil War and Militaria Collection of George Sanders of Albuquerque, New Mexico
