Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Period-flask with UCV inscription to Captain James McElvany, Company F, 35th Georgia Infantry, WIA Cedar Run.
5 3/4 x 3 x 1 1/2 in. glass, leather, and pewter flask (crack to glass base, surface wear to leather, some tarnish to pewter cup). Bottom of pewter cup marked, "H.N. Hewitt & Co, Sheffield." Pewter cup inscribed on obverse, "Capt. James McElvany / 35th Georgia Inf.," reverse with rendering of Confederate battle flag and "UCV."
James McElvany mustered into Company F, 35th Georgia Infantry as a 1st lieutenant on 23 September 1861. He was later promoted to captain on 9 May 1862; WIA at Cedar Run, VA, 9 August 1862; and promoted to major 19 May 1864.
