Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Hardtack taken from haversack of Private John Hubbard, Co. B, 108th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and kept by his wife as a memento.
Approx. 4 x 4 in. cracker housed in satin-lined wooden box (loss to two corners, unexamined out of the box). Accompanied by period inked note reading, "This was taken out of John Hubbard haversack by his wife in the fall of 1862 when the 108 Ills Voll Inftry left Peoria / Presented by I.B. Doolittle May 11th 1910 to G.A.R. Peoria Ills 5/11 - 10."
John Hubbard enlisted on 2 August 1862, and mustered into the 108th Illinois Infantry Regiment later that month. The 108th fought in the Battles of Arkansas Post, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Brice's Cross Roads, and Spanish Fort. Hubbard mustered out at Vicksburg, MS on 5 August 1865.
